Teething, diaper rash and diarrhea are common afflictions among infants. Although, they can be very distressing to the parents and baby, they are normal and do not usually require medical attention. Learning a few tricks from other parents or asking a pediatrician can help solve most of these infant ailments.

Fortunately, teething does not usually start until after four months of age. Some children do not start teething until much later. It often feels like the baby is teething forever before a little tooth finally breaks through. The good news is after the first few come in, baby becomes familiar with the pain and is not usually so cranky and miserable.

To help soothe a teething baby, parents can rely on natural remedies or try some of over the counter medications. Medicine should only be given after the doctor has been consulted. Teething toys that are nice and cold provide a great deal of comfort. Often times, simply rubbing a baby’s aching gum with a finger can provide some relief.

Teething may also be accompanied by diarrhea. Any diarrhea bouts should only last a day or so. Anymore than that should be discussed with a doctor. If baby is taking medicine for the teething pain, that may be causing the diarrhea. A change in formula or introducing a new food or juice often results in a day or two of diarrhea. Parents need to pay close attention to how frequently the diarrhea is occurring and if there is any blood.

Just one diarrhea diaper can result in a diaper rash. This adds to the baby’s misery during the teething process and should be taken care of immediately. Change diapers as soon as they are soiled. Only use alcohol free wipes or a washcloth dampened with water. Baby powder, cornstarch or a variety of diaper rash creams help protect a baby’s sensitive skin. Most diaper rashes clear up quickly, but if they are persistent and become worse a trip to the doctor may be warranted. A special cream can be prescribed to help clear up a painful diaper rash.
